Sprays tend to be mild and fast-acting. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll love our line of fast-acting melatonin supplement alternatives. For example, check out our melatonin vape — it’s safe, effective, and tastes great.

Best Pure Melatonin Spray

In this section, we’ll look at some melatonin sprays that don’t contain any added ingredients (other than the ingredients necessary to make a liquid spray). These are great for occasions when you just want a quick dose of melatonin and nothing else. Customers also love how easy these are to carry around and travel with, smaller than a bottle of pills.

Note that all the melatonin sprays in this category are oral sprays, meaning they’re meant to be sprayed under your tongue.

Nature’s Bounty Fast Acting Sleep Spray With Melatonin

Box packaging of Nature’s Bounty Fast-Acting Sleep Oral Melatonin Spray in mild mint flavor

The melatonin spray from Nature’s Bounty contains 0.5 mg of melatonin per spray. That may not sound like much, but because this is a fast-acting product, you may not need as big a dose as you otherwise would. Perhaps more importantly, you can very easily measure out a higher dose if need be: Each spray adds another 0.5 mg.

The product has a total of 100 sprays and comes in “mild mint” flavor (sweetened with stevia). The company claims it can be used before bed, but it can also be used when you wake up in the middle of the night and have trouble falling back asleep.

Source Naturals also makes a pure melatonin spray. Similar to the melatonin spray from Klean Athlete, each spray has 1.5 mg of melatonin. A serving is said to be three sprays, or 4.5 mg of melatonin. As such, this is a good option for people who know they want a slightly higher dose of melatonin. As with the Klean Athlete spray, you won’t get a dose smaller than 1.5 mg.

This product comes in orange flavor. Customers weren’t super thrilled with the taste, but as this product contains no sweeteners of any kind, it’s a good option for those who like to avoid stevia or sugar alcohols. A bottle contains 26 servings or 78 sprays.

Best Melatonin Spray With Additional Ingredients

In this section, we’re going to look at some melatonin sprays that contain additional, sleep-enhancing ingredients. These are a good choice for those occasions when you really need a nice relaxation-boost in addition to help falling and staying asleep.

As with the previous section, all the melatonin sprays we’re including here are oral sprays, so these are meant to be sprayed under the tongue.

ONNIT Instant Melatonin Spray

Spray bottle with box packaging of ONNIT Instant Melatonin Spray in lavender flavor

The melatonin spray from ONNIT combines melatonin and lavender oil for optimal relaxation. Each spray contains 0.5 mg of melatonin, and one serving is six sprays – or 3 mg of melatonin. However, you can easily adjust the melatonin dose if you need to, in increments of 0.5 mg. A bottle contains 30 servings, or 180 sprays.

Customers loved how quickly this supplement worked for them and how easy it is to adjust the dose. Many customer reviews commented that they didn’t need a full serving in order to fall asleep. Note that it also has a mint flavor that doesn’t contain any lavender oil, so opt for the lavender flavor if you’d like to experience the added benefits of lavender.

In fact, a systematic review and meta-analysis from Phytomedicine says lavender oil consumed orally can be an effective treatment for anxiety. Try the lavender flavor if you’re feeling anxious before bed to help relax and calm you.

Sleep Doctor PM Spray

If you’re looking for even more sleep-enhancing ingredients, you may want to try the melatonin spray from Sleep Doctor PM. In addition to melatonin, this spray contains magnolia bark, valerian root extract, magnesium, 5HTP, and GABA, all of which can help you relax and fall asleep.

For instance, valerian root extract has been shown to improve sleep problems and disorders. A systematic review and meta-analysis from the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine found valerian root to be safe and effective at treating sleep problems and improving sleep.

Additionally, a study from the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology found one of the compounds in magnolia bark to have an anxiolytic effect (meaning it can reduce anxiety), and magnesium supplementation can also help improve sleep according to another study from the Journal of Research in Medical Sciences.

Note that this melatonin spray doesn’t actually tell you how much melatonin is in each serving. Instead, it claims each serving contains 23.5 mg of its proprietary blend, which includes all the other ingredients. One serving is six sprays, and each bottle contains 30 servings, or 180 sprays.

Best Melatonin Pillow Spray

6 oz bottle of Dr Teal's Sleep Spray with Melatonin and Essenstial Oils

Perhaps you came here looking for a topical melatonin spray. The reality is that there are very few of these on the market – most melatonin sprays are meant to be used orally. If you’re looking for a topical melatonin product, you may have better luck searching for melatonin cream.

That said, we are including one melatonin spray that’s not an oral spray: Dr. Teal’s Sleep Spray. This isn’t meant to be used on your skin, though. Instead, you spray this directly onto your pillows, and anywhere else on your bed you’d like. You can also spray the air around your bed. The idea is to smell it as you lie in bed, and customers say it smells very relaxing.

In addition to melatonin, Dr. Teal’s Sleep Spray also contains lavender and chamomile essential oils, which smell very relaxing when sprayed on your pillow or sheets. Customers were amazed how well this product could help them fall asleep, with many claiming this was more effective than melatonin pills or gummies. They also loved the smell.

How Melatonin Spray Helps You Fall Asleep

Now that we’ve seen some examples of melatonin sprays, let’s talk about how they work. First, let’s review exactly how melatonin works, for anyone who needs a refresher.

How Melatonin Works in General

Melatonin is a naturally-occurring hormone produced by the brain’s pineal gland. It regulates your circadian rhythm, i.e. your sleep wake cycles. When the sun goes down – or when your brain perceives darkness – your body releases melatonin to help you wind down and prepare for sleep. In this way, melatonin helps regulate sleep.

As a supplement, melatonin has been used as a sleep aid for decades to help people get better sleep. It’s especially useful for improving sleep in those dealing with jet lag, shift work, daylight savings time, or any other issue that upends your sleep schedule. Taken just before bed, it can help to reset your circadian rhythm and let your body know that it’s bedtime.

The thing is, melatonin supplements usually come in pill form. Melatonin gummies are also quite popular, but as we’ll soon see, neither type of supplement is actually very effective.

The Advantage of Melatonin Spray over Pills and Gummies

Most of the melatonin sprays we reviewed above are meant to be taken orally. In other words, these are essentially liquid supplements, which means they’re likely to be much more effective than pills.

This is because liquid supplements are both more fast-acting and bioavailable than pills or gummies. Medicare Europe says liquid supplements can be absorbed in 1-4 minutes, and they have 98% bioavailability. Meanwhile, pills need upwards of half an hour just to be broken down by the stomach, and Medicare Europe claims they have only 39-53% bioavailability.

For melatonin pills, the actual bioavailability may be even lower. A study from the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found melatonin pills to have an average of 15% bioavailability. To put this in perspective, this means if you take a 10 mg melatonin pill, you may only get 1.5 mg of melatonin.

With this in mind, it’s no wonder the melatonin sprays we looked at tend to have less melatonin per serving than most melatonin pills. When you’re actually able to absorb most or all of the melatonin, you don’t need to take nearly as much.

That said, if you’re interested in trying liquid melatonin supplements, you have other options besides sprays. There are many other liquid melatonin supplements that are just as fast-acting and bioavailable as these sprays. The only difference is that they don’t come in spray bottles.

In our humble opinion, the best liquid melatonin on the market is our very own MELO Sip. Unlike nearly all the other melatonin liquids you can find, this is a powdered drink, and it comes in individual serving pouches. This makes it very easy to transport. Simply add it to a glass of water (of any size, depending on your desired concentration) when you’re ready to take it.

It’s both a lot tastier (without added sugar) and easier to take than melatonin tinctures (which often include hard-to-measure droppers). Plus, it has bonus ingredients: In addition to melatonin, you’ll also get a soothing blend of chamomile extract, valerian root extract, GABA, and l-theanine to help you relax as well as vitamins and minerals to enhance your sleep.

As for the other kind of melatonin spray that isn’t meant to be taken orally, there is substantially less research on the effects of such products. Topical melatonin or melatonin applied to your pillow may help you relax, but the only kind of evidence we have with respect to these products is anecdotal, so keep this in mind as you browse different melatonin products.

Other Kinds of Melatonin Supplements

While liquid melatonin is much more effective than melatonin pills, it’s still not the most fast-acting melatonin product on the market. For that, you’ll want to check out melatonin diffusers or vaporizers.

Our melatonin diffuser, MELO Air contains just three ingredients: melatonin, organic vegetable glycerin, and natural flavors. It contains absolutely no nicotine, THC, vitamin E acetate, nor any other ingredient known to be harmful when inhaled.

And as we already mentioned, it works even faster than liquid. After a few puffs from a MELO Air diffuser, you’ll feel the effects very quickly. You also won’t need as much melatonin as you normally take, since this product will be absorbed more fully by your body. MELO Air comes in a wide variety of flavors, all of which are customer-approved.

Try MELO Labs for All Your Oral Melatonin Needs

As we’ve seen, there’s a lot to consider when you’re interested in trying a melatonin spray. You first need to decide if you’re interested in an oral spray (which describes most of these products) or if you’re looking for something more topical.

For the oral sprays, we recommend Nature’s Bounty, Klean Athlete, and Source Naturals. Try the ONNIT spray lavender flavor to experience the benefits of lavender or the Sleep Doctor PM spray to get a boost of other herbal ingredients to help you relax and sleep. Dr. Teal’s is a good option for those who want to try a pillow spray.

But if you’re looking to get the most out of your melatonin supplement, you might consider trying other types of supplements that work even faster. MELO Air vaporizers are designed to get melatonin into your bloodstream as quickly as possible, and they taste great. They’re even smaller and more convenient to carry around than spray bottles.

MELO Sip is another great option for those interested in liquid melatonin supplements. With a variety of herbal ingredients as well as vitamins and minerals, MELO Sip will help relax you more so than any of the other products we’ve looked at. And you won’t have a “sleep hangover” the next day. It comes in a variety of tasty flavors.

So, when choosing your next melatonin supplement, consider MELO Labs instead of (or in addition to) any of the above melatonin sprays.
